Great picture, horrible software/apps, bad hardware, bad Samsung support

Great picture, horrible software/apps, bad hardware, bad Samsung support
I'm writing this review to warn folks of what they're getting. I've had the TV for about 7 months now. Regarding the software/apps on the TV: The app I use most frequently is Netflix, but it hasn't worked for me for several days. I try calling Samsung and just get a run around, and finally they tell me just to wait for the next software update to come out. Also, a lot of times, you're required to re log into Netflix. I know it's not a big deal, but having to type the username/password into the TV using the remote is tedious after doing it many times. I'm hesitant to try other apps since the Netflix one is so problematic. Plus there just isn't much variety of useful apps available. On the software front, I'll be sticking to Apple TV to deliver content, and recommend you do the same. Regarding the hardware: When I got the TV delivered, it worked for about an hour, and it was great. Then the screen went black. Foolishly, I got in touch with Samsung. I went through the normal troubleshooting steps, but no help. They sent a 3rd party technician to look at it a week later. He claimed he knew the problem, but didn't have the parts on him to fix it. So I had to wait another week (2 weeks now without a working TV for $2,000+) before he could be back with the part. After realizing the problem wasn't going to be fixed working with Samsung and the 3rd party, I finally called Amazon and told them the problem. They sent a new one to replace the nonfunctioning TV within a few days, and no questions asked. Amazon to the rescue! So far with the new TV set, there hasn't been any hardware issues. I must say though that the picture quality is fantastic on this TV (when it works properly). The HD content is very crisp. The bad experiences I've had with this TV will probably prevent me from ever purchasing a Samsung again. I haven't tried the LG or Sony 4K TV's but I don't think they can be worse than the experience I've had with Samsung on this one. Updating for the latest issue I'm having with the TV. They're sending a TV repairman now to fix the TV. See the attached photo for what the TV picture looks like now. Cannot get through to customer service either, so there isn't much I can do to escalate the problem.

[Knocked off 3 stars because TV died, will re-evaluate when new one arrives]
[Added 3 stars when new TV arrived]
[Added 1 star after adjusting settings and watching multiple sources, TV, and Movies]

My 8550 arrives on Friday, May 23rd. I have been very frustrated with the info available online, at stores, and with Samsung. I think I have it mostly figured out, so here goes:

Samsung reps are clueless on Chat - they were telling me all kinds of wrong info (clearly poor scripts). "The One Connect doesn't come with the TV, but you need one because the TV is just a monitor" (it has no ports they said). They said "I could buy the One Connect Box from the parts department" (false). They said "I would not be able to watch any 4K without the Box" (false, it has the codec and HDMI 2.0). I pushed back and explained a few facts I was reading from their own website's specs. They finally started apologizing and taking back what they said about the "missing ports" and "need for the box".

This model is a unique beast in their lineup for 2014. It isn't an 8500 or 9000, obviously because it's the 8550. It is so new that the reps don't know what it has or doesn't (I blame that on Product Marketing/Management teams). So, the 8550 comes with all the connections you need on the back (interesting that nowhere I've looked is there a picture of the back of this TV - including the full PDF owner's manual). In my 40+ years of audio/video experience, I have never come across this issue. I sold A/V equipment in my college days, I built my own home theater in Las Vegas, I had 13 TVs in that house, and I build my own PCs. I do heavy research for every purchase I make. Amazon is my #1 go to for 80% of my purchases. This TV is certainly a puzzle.

I have seen this TV in person at Best Buy (55" model). The picture is amazing; rich colors, black blacks, nice bezel, solid base!

The One Connect or UDH Pack will be needed in the near future to support downloading/streaming of 4K content from the Samsung Store. The UHD pack that's out now for $299 has 5 movies and 2 documentaries. The second UHD pack will have different movies and possibly add support for the Samsung Store. The One Connect Box [edit, stopped in mid-thought] will add future features/functionality/technology when it arrives. This is the best I can make of the information I've gathered so far.

I will update the post after I receive the TV and experiment.

UPDATE 5/23/14 - TV just arrived at my office. Hard to just stare at the box - but fortunately leaving early today for the holiday weekend! I will add updates this weekend.

UPDATE 5/23/14 PM - Streaming 4K "House of Cards" from Netflix right now, works perfectly. TV is a little thicker than my non-4K Samsung - having all of the ports on the back of the TV instead of the One Connect Box probably adds to the thickness. The extra Smart Remote is small and very convenient. It takes a few minutes to get used to pointing the remote at the TV, but man it makes input so much easier than using the up/down/left/right buttons. The Samsung Smart Apps work 100% better than my older Samsung. The new quad-processor makes the apps run as fast as my computer. They were a joke in the original smart TVs.

UPDATE 5/23/14 Late PM - watching a Blu-Ray movie and 90 minutes in the picture went black. The TV is dead. I have unplugged all of the connections and power and let it rest. It will turn on and show a blank backlit screen, but nothing displays - no menu, no smart hub, no TV, no video, nothing. I now have an expensive paperweight. Contacting Amazon ASAP.

UPDATE 5/24/14 - Called Amazon and got some technical support. They had me do almost everything I already tried last night, including holding a flashlight to the screen to see if I could make out the image. The only new thing they had me try was holding the exit button for 10 seconds to reset the TV to factory settings. No help. The TV is on and responding to the remote, but the panel or something is just dead. Sure they're sending me a new TV, but it won't arrive until June 2, 2014. I'm not a happy camper at the moment. I was hoping to write some decent review information, not talk about my dead TV issues. It's uninstalled and back in the box. Reinstalled my 40" Samsung.

UPDATE 5/26/14 - While I'm waiting for my replacement, I thought I'd post another observation. Everywhere the product description states that you can watch "whatever is on the TV screen" on your mobile device using the Samsung App. First of all there are three apps for the Samsung Smartview. Threre is #1, then one for the iPad, then #2. The only one that works with this TV is version #2. All of the apps have horrible ratings. I got the app to recognize the TV, but while watching Netflix or PS3 movie, the app says the current format is not supported for viewing. So my question is: 'whatever' means what exactly? I have a TiVo Stream which allows me to watch my TiVo on my iPad, so I know it's possible and pretty cool. What's up with this feature Samsung?

UPDATE 5/30/14 - Well, the new TV arrived early because I contacted the carrier and scheduled it for today (instead of Monday). The new TV is installed and set up again. Picture looks great, especially the 4K samples on Netflix. I'm still working on all of the picture settings that need to be adjusted (blur, judder, contrast, clear motion, brightness, eco settings, etc.). No point on anyone commenting on the picture unless you've done your homework online and made the recommended adjustments. Yes, Samsung should ship them with the proper settings, but I guess some people like the hyper-real looking image?? Universal remote setting work OK, but can't get the PS3 to turn off/on (and yes I have the IR adapter for the PS3). Hopefully this TV will last more than 90 mins like the first one.

UPDATE 5/31/14 - Spent all night last night and all day today making adjustments and watching content. Currently I think the settings are almost perfect. The picture is amazing! Enjoyed several Blu-ray movies last night. Today I watched a lot of auto racing. The Barbados RallyCross was the hit of the day, This TV has no problem with fast motion (sports/racing). Understand these cars go from 0 to 60 in two seconds! I also watched drag racing. There is zero blur and the images are crystal clear during the high speed motion. I have the image fairly bright for regular TV and dimmer for movies. Color is spot on - amazing reds, blues, greens, blacks, and whites.

The small remote works very well. The point and click makes input EXTREMELY easy compared to any other remote I've used. I even had luck using the voice control, but it's control is limited. This remote is also controlling my TiVo better than any other remote packed with a TV (my Harmony remotes do a lot more and have a keyboard, but those are aftermarket remotes).

I'm not impressed with House of Cards, but the other four nature videos are amazing and a great way to show off your 4K. I will buy the Samsung UHD pack soon and give updates on those 5 movies and 2 documentaries. Sadly, only the upcoming UHD pack will provide 4K streaming support, so I'll have to buy that one also.

UPDATE 6/20/14 - Continue to enjoy all the features and picture quality of this TV. One significant observation is that this TV runs VERY HOT for an LED HDTV. My other LED Samsungs run with almost no noticeable heat discharge. Only my Samsung Plasma TV runs this hot. Walking by the TV you actually feel the heat coming off the TV. The biggest offender is the edge of the TV which I expect because these TVs are edge-lit. But the heat does radiate from the whole TV, just not as hot. Perhaps the existence of so many more pixels impacts the temperature?? Thoughts?

This Television absolutely has superb clarity, color and detail on its 55" screen and the sound quality is excellent for such tiny hidden speakers as well.

I had first tried a Series-6 Samsung TV but was disappointed in everything but its 3D and THAT was enough for me to try again for a more satisfying Samsung.

The '4K' TV's on display in the Stores look fantastic with their Ultra High Definition content playing as you would expect.

I have a superb 1080i (2D) HDTV which easily blew away that first Samsung but seeing how this UHD 8550 so easily converts 1080i/p (or 720p & 480i) onto its Ultra High Definition screen made me wonder why that capability was never seen on the in-store displays.

I know I would have given 4K more consideration from the start, if I could have seen that capability to look better than any HDTV all of The Time, not just with 4K content.

What you never see in the TV-Stores is the Remote, that first Samsung's Remote was quickly replaced with my old $20 Universal Remote.

This 8550 was a completely different experience and its Standard Remote was truly excellent with a great feel and ability to also control whatever brand of DVD, BD or STB you have as well.

But my greatest surprise and THE MOST OUTSTANDING FEATURE for me was that OTHER little Remote that comes with these 'better' Samsung's. Most of the other wonderful features were expected after reading all the glowing reviews and reports and this was 'icing-on-the-cake' for me.

This is the (new for 2014) "Smart Control": Smaller than your Smartphone and much more ergonomic to handle, this gives you truly Magical Ability to control your Smart TV.

As soon as you pick it up, your thumb or index is on the 'mute' which is what we most often want the fastest access to when we pick up the remote.

It only has half the 'buttons' of its big brother Standard Remote but does so much more and has a lot more space between most of them as well and what great buttons they are.

The seventeen different size, nicely spaced icon buttons on the upper three-quarters each have a unique tactile feel and positive response, you can even enable a sound feedback at three levels for confirmation. The ten on the lower quarter are easy to memorize and descend in order of use frequency. Unlike the Standard Remote, there is no need to 'light' this one.

It's that large 'Control-Pad' in the Center third of the unit that gets the most attention. It has the usual four directional and center 'enter' functions but it does so much more.

It acts as a 'scroll wheel' with the slightest finger swipe up or down and as the left/right arrow keys with the lightest swipe across. You can set sensitivities to three levels as well as two sizes available for its on-screen Keypad that gives you the 'rest-of-the-buttons', Numbers and other less frequently used keys. As soon as you highlight the first number, it presents all your 'favorite channels' on a list that start with that number.

The most amazing feature on this small device is its on-screen cursor/arrow control which is enabled when your finger touches that keypad, but instead of using it like a 'Touchpad', you just move the Smart Remote in any direction to watch the on-screen cursor move and highlight on-screen items when you are in an application that needs such control, you can also select a speed for this mouse.

It also inherits the control for your Blu-Ray or other peripheral device when selected, you can store the Standard Remote on a shelf if you want.

Using her (you can choose M/F response) Voice Control will Volume up/down, mute, select a channel or you can just say "CW" or "NBC", "PBS" brings a list of all four of them. Her real expertise is for Searching, say "Downton Abby" and 72 Web Pages will scroll across the bottom of the screen, say "Google 4K" and you get a full screen Browser open to Google with 4K on the search pad. Her understanding of spoken words is excellent and intuitive.

Best of all with this "Smart Control" is that unlike the Standard Remote that uses infrared that has to point at a sensor on the TV, this communicates through Bluetooth, meaning that not only you don't need to 'point' it at the TV, you can walk off into the kitchen or bathroom with it and still control the volume or mute. Bluetooth radio has a short range and it's twelve meters and the second room into my kitchen, where it still works fine. You can 'mute' before even picking it up...

I had planned to connect a Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse, but this 'Smart Control" does such a great job (you can type the QWERTY on-screen keyboard easily with its magic-mouse) that I don't think I'll bother.

This wonderful "Smart Control" makes a truly great TV so much better for me, Art

Great TV. The main thing that bugs me about TV's is the motion blur, I have say that this TV has great motion blur. The TV feels like it is very well made and solid. The metal bezel and IR repeater are small details that really make you appreciate the quality of work that went into making this TV. I have this TV mounted on the wall in my living room and it is fantastic.

This TV is beautiful. the smart remote works real well in learning your components, I'm going from a 53' Panasonic plasma, so there is a bit of a difference. The plasma definitely has a very warm, or soft image, compared to the LED, But I think I can get used to the 4K upgrade!

2.0 out of 5 stars Expensive but poor model

We have bought this relatively expensive Samsung UN55HU8550 and got a bunch of problems.
Well, the quality of the image and the sound are really good but...

First, although we have paid for smart TV, this device is not a smart TV.
I was able to connect to internet (Wi-Fi) but I was not able to watch movies from the local network (my computer) and other networks. Only Netflix works OK. I cannot watch even BBC News.
In the same time, my Roku box attached to this device does not have any problems in playing movies. (I expected that I could watch movies without Roku now. - No!)
I tried different server software. Especially bad is SmartView 2.0 recommending by Samsung for using with this TV. It tried to violate the Windows 7 protected memory, and OS had shut it down.

Second, sometimes the TV stops accepting any signals from the remote control, except of power on and power off. When it happens I usually switch off the TV and switch it on again. Sometimes it helps. I found out that it often happens when head phones are connected. If it happens when the head phones are in, I just remove them from the socket, and this always helps! The TV starts accepting signals from the remote. It looks strange.

Third, just of the sudden there appeared interruptions in the demonstration. The TV just stopped for couple of seconds every 2-3 minutes. The screen became dark, the sound disappeared as well. I have switched to other HDMI port, and it helped. For how long?..

I strongly DO NOT RECOMMEND this model.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Television! Impeccable image, ok sound

The product is amazing. Beautiful image, very happy with the product. The downside in my opinion is that the speakers on the television are just average, so it kind of needs a home theatre for the perfect cinema experience.
